Texas does not have one Christmas town. It has a whole circuit of them — German market towns in the Hill Country, a Victorian port city on the Gulf Coast, free lights walks around lakes and courthouse squares, and two very different Christmas train rides that people constantly mix up.
This guide covers 12 Christmas towns in Texas for 2026, with verified dates, admission, and book-ahead warnings in one place. Every date below comes from an official organizer/city source or from two independent secondary sources, as researched on October 15, 2026. Where a 2026 detail could not be confirmed, this guide says so instead of guessing. Check the official event page before you travel, because dates and prices can change.
Texas also has heavyweight entries in our national list of 15 Most Magical Christmas Towns in the USA — Grapevine and Fredericksburg in particular — and this Texas guide is the state-level companion to that list.

Which town for whom?
- Most events in one place: Grapevine. More than 1,400 events over 40 days, plus the train, the parade, and ICE! Harry Potter.
- German Christmas: Fredericksburg and New Braunfels. Fredericksburg for nightly lights and the German pyramid; New Braunfels for the Sophienburg Weihnachtsmarkt and Wassailfest. For more on the German tradition, see our guide to the Best German-Style Christmas Markets in the US.
- Free lights walks: Wimberley, Marble Falls, and Johnson City. All three are free to walk, donation-supported, and best on a weeknight.
- Big-ticket family day: College Station’s Santa’s Wonderland, with snow tubing, a hayride, ice skating, and a Texas Santa.
- Victorian Christmas: Galveston, for Dickens on the Strand and Moody Gardens. If you like Victorian Christmas markets, see also our guides to Christmas Markets in Pittsburgh and Christmas Markets in Cleveland.
- Big-city Christmas base: San Antonio, for the River Walk lights and the Ford Holiday River Parade. San Antonio also appears in our 10 Best Christmas Cities in the USA.
- Christmas train rides: Grapevine or Palestine — but they are not the same ride. See the warning in both sections below.
- New for 2026: Boerne, Texas’s only Hallmark official 2026 Christmas Town pick.
1. Grapevine — Christmas Capital of Texas
Grapevine is the anchor pick, and the only town in this guide that can fill a whole weekend on its own. The Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau describes the season as more than 1,400 events over 40 days, drawing more than 2 million visitors a year. Grapevine was also named a Newsweek Best Christmas Town in 2024 and 2026.
The headline kickoff is the 38th Annual Carol of Lights on Monday, November 23, from 4–8pm on Historic Main Street, with a kickoff at 6:30pm. It is free, and TEXRail is recommended for parking.
Santa’s North Pole Express runs November 27–December 30, 2026. Tickets went on sale October 1, 2026. It is an approximately 45-minute ride in 1920s-era coaches, with singalongs, elves, and Santa.
Secondary listings report the 47th Annual Parade of Lights on Thursday, December 3, at 7pm on Historic Main Street, with about 100 floats and marching bands. That date is secondary-sourced, not confirmed on an official Grapevine page at research time — re-verify before you go. Secondary listings also report a Merry & Bright Christmas Drone Show on Monday, December 7, at 7pm on Main Street. Same caveat applies.
At the Gaylord Texan Resort, ICE! featuring Harry Potter runs November 13, 2026–January 3, 2027. It uses about 2 million pounds of hand-carved ice, is a 9°F walk-through, and is the first Harry Potter ICE!.
Practical notes: DFW Airport is minutes away, Main Street is walkable, and train, ice, and parade tickets sell out — book early.

2. Fredericksburg — Weihnachtszeit
Fredericksburg is the German anchor. The centerpiece is Christmas Nights of Lights, nightly November 24, 2026–January 5, 2027, at Marktplatz (126 W Main St). Music starts at 5pm, followed by a 10-minute heritage audio and lighting countdown at 6pm, with music ending at 6:30pm. It is NOT held on December 4 (parade night) or December 31 (New Year’s Eve).
Marktplatz also holds a 26-foot German Christmas Pyramid, handcrafted in Germany in 2009, plus a 30-foot community tree.
Secondary listings report the Light the Night Christmas Parade on Friday, December 4, at 6:30pm on Main Street, with reserved bleacher seating at about $43. That date and price are secondary-sourced — re-verify on the official page before buying.
Fredericksburg Trade Days runs November 20–22, with a Holiday Encore Trade Days November 27–29, and 350+ vendors.
Practical notes: Main Street has 150+ shops, and the US-290 wineries are nearby. There is no real public transit — designate a driver if you are wine-tasting.

3. New Braunfels + Gruene — German markets, Wassailfest, and a drive-through
New Braunfels pairs a real German market with a free street festival and a drive-through lights ranch nearby. Gruene, its tiny historic district next door, adds live music at Gruene Hall, Texas’s oldest dance hall.
The Weihnachtsmarkt, a Sophienburg Museum fundraiser, runs November 20–22, 10am–5pm, at the New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center (375 S Castell Ave). A Gala on Thursday, November 19, 6–9pm, includes Friday–Sunday entry. Expect German collectibles and ornaments from 60+ artisans. Ticket details for the market itself were TBC at research time — check the Sophienburg page before you go.
Wassailfest runs Thursday, December 3, 6–9pm, at Main Plaza (500 Main Plaza). It is free, with free wassail tastings and school-choir music. A free shuttle runs from City Hall (550 Landa St) from 5–11pm.
Secondary listings report a Downtown Lighting & Santa’s Arrival on Friday, November 20, 6–9pm, at Main Plaza, with free photos with Santa, a Holiday Haus Vendor Market, and a free shuttle from 5:30–9:30pm. That event is secondary-sourced — re-verify on the city page.
Secondary listings also report Santa’s Ranch drive-through at 9561 I-35 N, running November 6, 2026–January 3, 2027, nightly including holidays: Sunday–Thursday 6–10pm, Friday–Saturday 6–11pm. Reported prices are a single car pass at $37+tax and a season pass at $74+tax, for a mile-long route with 3 million lights. That pricing and schedule are secondary-sourced — re-verify on the operator’s site.
Gruene’s Christmas Market Days and Town Lighting (with Cowboy Kringle arriving on horseback) are real annual events, but 2026 dates found at research time were conflicting or undated. Do not rely on a 2026 Gruene date in this guide — check gruenetexas.com / gruenemarketdays.com before you go.
Practical note: New Braunfels pairs easily with San Antonio, about 45 minutes away.
4. Boerne — Texas’s only Hallmark official 2026 Christmas Town pick
Boerne is the 2026 news hook in this guide. It is Texas’s only community on Hallmark Channel’s 2026 Merriest Christmas Town list, a list of 25 finalists nationwide. Voting ran through September 4, 2026.
The ticketed anchor is the Old West Christmas Light Fest at Enchanted Springs Ranch (42 State Hwy 46 W, about 3 miles west of Boerne off Hwy 46, exit 540 from I-10). It runs 15 nights: November 27–29, December 4–6, December 11–13, and December 18–23, 2026, from 5–10pm. Admission from the operator: general admission $25 for ages 6+, military/first responder $20, under 5 free, season pass $37.50 (online prices plus fees; gate is full price if not sold out). Parking is free. Expect Santa photos, snow, live music, a trick roper, a Grinch Room, and a Barrel Train.
Secondary sources indicate Dickens on Main runs Friday–Saturday, November 27–28, 2026 (Thanksgiving weekend), on the Hill Country Mile, free, with four themed villages, a tree lighting Friday at 6pm, snow on Main Street, ice sculpting, and carolers. That date is secondary-sourced — re-verify at holidaysinboerne.com before you go, because older articles show the 2025 edition on November 28–29.
Practical notes: Boerne sits on I-10, about 30 minutes northwest of San Antonio. The Hill Country Mile is a 1.1-mile Main Street, and Market Days parking is scarce — arrive early.
5. San Antonio — River Walk lights and the Ford Holiday River Parade
San Antonio is the big-city anchor and the best base for a full Christmas vacation in this guide.
The 45th Annual Ford Holiday River Parade + Lighting Ceremony is Friday, November 27, at 6pm at the Tobin Center, with a live broadcast at 7:05pm from the Arneson River Theatre. It features 27 illuminated floats plus 5 entertainment floats, and 200,000 lights. There is a free viewing area, first-come first-served, on the east side between Pecan and Richmond — bring your own chair. Reserved restaurant dinner packages are also offered. Parade tickets are non-refundable, ages 2+ need a ticket, and no strollers, ice chests, or carriers are allowed on the River Walk for the event. The 2026 theme is “Holiday Wishes Come True.”
River Walk holiday lights run November 27, 2026–early January 2027, nightly sundown–sunrise, free (public park).
Practical notes: Downtown parking is paid street/garage parking. A secondary tip: go on a weeknight a week or two after opening night for the same lights with a fraction of the crowd. For Tex-Mex holiday food, head to Market Square and try tamales.
6. Galveston — Victorian Christmas plus Moody Gardens
Galveston pairs a Victorian street festival with a full holiday park at Moody Gardens.
The 53rd Annual Dickens on the Strand runs Friday–Sunday, December 4–6, 2026, in The Strand National Historic Landmark District. Friday’s Fezziwig’s Beer Hall runs 5–9pm, free. Saturday hours are 10am–9pm; Sunday hours are 12–6pm. Expect 4 stages, parades, Tiny Tim’s Play Land, a Shopkeeper Skills Village, and roaming characters. Attendance is 35,000+ guests. No pets, ice chests, or scooters. 2026 ticket prices for Saturday/Sunday were TBC at research time — check galvestonhistory.org before you buy.
Holiday in the Gardens at Moody Gardens runs November 21, 2026–January 2, 2027, nightly 6–10pm. It is the 25th holiday season, with a mile-long Holiday Lights Trail (2 million+ lights), ICE LAND: Caribbean Christmas (2 million pounds of ice, Shiver’s Ice Bar), ice skating, an Arctic Slide, Rudolph 4D / Scrooge 4D, and a new live show, A Very Electric Christmas, December 19–January 2 (no show December 21). 2026 ticket prices were TBC at research time — check the official Moody Gardens site.
Practical notes: Galveston is I-45 South from Houston. Parking is paid street parking and garages (21st & Market, 25th & Harborside). Book island lodging early — this is one of the busiest weekends of the year.

7. Wimberley — Best free lights walk
The EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens Trail of Lights runs November 28–December 26, 2026, on a walking trail of about 8 acres. It is FREE (donations accepted, suggested $20/family — the largest EmilyAnn fundraiser). Hours: Friday/Saturday 6–10pm, other days 6–9pm. Opening night is Saturday, November 28: ceremonies 5–6pm, Santa arrives at 5pm, hilltop tree lighting/singing 5:15–6pm. Expect nightly live entertainment, a yule log with complimentary marshmallows and hot chocolate, Santa most nights, and concessions.
Practical notes: Address is 1101 FM 2325. Drop-off with mobility assistance is available. Wimberley sits between San Marcos and Austin — pair the walk with Wimberley Square shops.
8. Marble Falls — Best free lakeside lights walk
The Walkway of Lights runs November 29, 2026–January 2, 2027, at Lakeside Park in Marble Falls, on Lake Marble Falls.
Secondary sources agree on scale: 2 million lights, 130–250 displays, a light tunnel (12,000 lights), a 17,000-light pole tree, about a 30-minute walk, Santa on select evenings, and hot chocolate/cider.
Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted. The official listing shows no price, and a conflicting directory listing shows a small per-person fee that is not verified, so this guide does not publish a fee. 2026 hours were TBC at research time — check visitmarblefalls.org before you go.
Practical notes: Marble Falls is about 45 miles west of Austin and 85 miles north of San Antonio. Arrive early to dine and shop downtown. Inks Lake State Park is nearby.
9. Georgetown — Most beautiful town square
The Christmas Stroll runs Friday–Sunday, December 4–6, 2026, on the Downtown Square. Hours: Friday 4–10pm, Saturday 10am–9:30pm, Sunday 10am–4pm. It is FREE, with live entertainment, shopping, dining, kids’ activities, and a parade, plus villages including Bethlehem Village, Whoo-Village, and Santa’s Village. Free parking: 7th & Rock, Austin Ave & 5th, MLK & 7th/8th, and garages at 6th & Main and 4th & Rock.
The Lighting of the Square 2026 date was TBC at research time — this guide does not publish an assumed date.
Practical notes: Georgetown calls its square the “Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas,” with 40+ shops and Palace Theatre shows. It is about 30 miles north of Austin.
10. Johnson City — Twinkliest Town in Texas
Johnson City’s Lights Spectacular runs late November 2026–early January 2027. The exact 2026 opening date was NOT confirmed on an official page at research time — check lightspectacular.com before you go. The prior-year pattern was November 29, 2025–January 4, 2026, with lights dusk–midnight, free. This guide does not present the prior-year dates as 2026 dates.
What is stable: 2 million+ lights, the Blanco County Courthouse draped in 100,000+ white lights, PEC headquarters oaks with 1 million+ lights, Memorial Park displays, and a walk-through (not drive-through) layout. It is free.
Secondary listings report a Holiday Parade on the Saturday evening of opening weekend (about 6:30pm) plus fireworks, and a Hill Country Holiday Market about 1–10pm the same day. Those details are secondary-sourced — re-verify.
Practical notes: Johnson City is about 50 miles west of Austin. Arrive before sundown and park at/around the courthouse streets. The Science Mill is nearby.
11. College Station — Santa’s Wonderland
Santa’s Wonderland runs November 13, 2026–January 3, 2027, at 18898 Hwy 6, College Station. Attractions include a hayride through lights, snow tubing and snow play, ice skating, Texas Santa, a petting zoo, live music, and Texas eats. Hours vary by day — for example, opening Friday, November 13, 6pm–midnight, and Saturday 3pm–midnight, with many Monday–Tuesday dates closed. Check the day-by-day calendar on the official site.
Prices from the official pricing page: Any Day adult $42.75 + fee ($45 total), child 3–12 $37.75 + fee ($40 total). At the Gate: adult $59.95, child $54.95. Sales tax is not included. The Pre-Season Super Saver sale ended October 14, so this guide does not present Super Saver prices as still available.
The park calls itself the largest Christmas attraction / park in the world. That is the operator’s self-described marketing claim, not an independently verified fact.
Practical notes: College Station is about 1.5 hours from Austin and Houston. Parking lots open 1 hour before the park. Some food/retail locations have limited hours.
12. Palestine — THE POLAR EXPRESS, Texas State Railroad
Palestine’s THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride at the Texas State Railroad, Palestine Depot (789 Park Rd 70), runs November 13–December 28, 2026, on select dates: November 13–15, 19–24, 27–29; December 3–6, 9–13, 15–16, 18–23, 26–28. Departures are 3:00–7:30pm by day. It is an approximately 60-minute round trip to the North Pole. Cocoa chefs serve hot chocolate and cookies, the book is read aloud, the film soundtrack plays, Santa and elves board at the North Pole, and every passenger gets a silver sleigh bell. Pajamas are encouraged. Parking is free.
Important: Palestine’s POLAR EXPRESS is NOT Grapevine’s Santa’s North Pole Express. They are two different rides, run by different operators, in different towns. Competitors that just say “Polar Express in Texas” without distinguishing them create the confusion this guide is correcting.
2026 ticket prices were TBC at research time — secondary sources conflicted. Check texasstaterailroad.net before you buy. This guide does not publish a price.
Warning: the December 4–6 weekend collision
December 4–6, 2026, is the busiest collision weekend in this guide. Dickens on the Strand (Galveston), the Georgetown Christmas Stroll, and Fredericksburg’s Light the Night Parade (December 4) all land on the same weekend. Gruene events also cluster in this window, but 2026 Gruene dates were unconfirmed at research time.
Pick ONE lane that weekend. Do not try to cover Galveston, Georgetown, and Fredericksburg in the same weekend — they are different regions, and you will spend the weekend driving.
Regional clusters: how to pair towns
Hill Country loop (Austin or San Antonio base): Boerne → Fredericksburg → Johnson City → Marble Falls → Wimberley → Georgetown → New Braunfels/Gruene. These towns are all within about 1–1.5 hours of each other.
Gulf Coast: Galveston (Dickens + Moody Gardens) pairs with Houston.
East Texas: Palestine is the East Texas train anchor in this guide. This guide excludes Marshall entirely — its 2026 dates could not be verified at research time.
DFW: Grapevine pairs with Fort Worth/Dallas.
Book-ahead timeline
- Now / October: Grapevine North Pole Express tickets went on sale October 1 and sell out quickly. College Station Santa’s Wonderland — buy Any Day online rather than paying gate prices.
- November: Book Fredericksburg lodging for parade/market weekends early. Book Galveston island lodging early for the December 4–6 weekend. Check Dickens on the Strand ticket prices on the official site (reported secondary note: prices rise November 20 — re-verify).
- Before each trip: Re-check the official event page for any TBC item in this guide: Johnson City opening date, Gruene 2026 dates, Grapevine parade/drone show (secondary), Dickens / Moody Gardens / Palestine 2026 prices, and Marble Falls 2026 hours.
