Christmas in the USA can look completely different depending on where I go. I could spend December surrounded by skyscrapers and enormous Christmas trees in New York City, wander through a Bavarian-style village in Washington or escape to a snowy mountain town in Colorado. That variety is exactly what makes planning a Christmas trip so much fun.

If I’m looking for twinkling lights, Christmas markets, festive events, snowy streets or just that unmistakable holiday atmosphere, these are 10 of the best Christmas cities and destinations in the USA to put on my list.

1. New York City, New York

If I want the classic American Christmas experience, New York City would be one of my first choices. The city seems to get even more energetic during the holiday season, with Christmas lights, decorated storefronts, enormous trees and festive events appearing across Manhattan.

I’d start at Rockefeller Center to see its famous Christmas tree and ice-skating rink, then walk along Fifth Avenue to see the elaborate holiday window displays. Watching the Rockettes perform the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall would also be high on my list.

What I love about Christmas in New York is that I don’t have to plan every minute. I can simply walk around and keep discovering decorations, markets, restaurants and holiday displays. Recent travel rankings have also placed New York among the top U.S. destinations for Christmas experiences.

Best for: Christmas lights, shopping, entertainment and first-time visitors

Don’t miss: Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, Radio City Music Hall, Bryant Park and the holiday markets

2. Leavenworth, Washington

Charming Bavarian-style building in Leavenworth illuminated with festive lights at night.

Leavenworth is probably the closest I can get to stepping into a Christmas movie without leaving the USA. Tucked into Washington’s Cascade Mountains, this small town has a distinctive Bavarian-inspired appearance that becomes even more magical during the holidays.

More than half a million lights decorate the town during the Christmas season, while holiday events bring caroling, Santa appearances and seasonal activities to the streets. If I’m hoping for snow, mountain scenery and a traditional Christmas atmosphere, Leavenworth would be difficult to beat.

It’s also one of those destinations where the town itself is the attraction. I could spend the day exploring shops and cafés before returning after dark to see the lights come on.

Best for: Snowy Christmas trips, couples and Christmas lights

Don’t miss: The Christmas Lighting Festival, Front Street, Bavarian shops and the surrounding Cascade Mountains

3. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago gives me a completely different kind of Christmas experience. The combination of skyscrapers, winter weather, elaborate decorations and European-inspired holiday traditions makes the city especially atmospheric in December.

One of the biggest attractions is Christkindlmarket Chicago, a German-style Christmas market where I can browse seasonal gifts, decorations and traditional food. I’d also visit Millennium Park, see the Christmas tree and spend some time exploring the city’s decorated shopping areas.

The cold weather is part of the experience here. After walking around downtown, I can warm up with hot chocolate or coffee before heading back out to see more of the city’s Christmas lights.

Best for: Christmas markets, city breaks and winter atmosphere

Don’t miss: Christkindlmarket Chicago, Millennium Park, the Magnificent Mile and the Chicago Christmas Tree

4. Santa Fe, New Mexico

A festive scene featuring illuminated reindeer and a Santa sleigh, perfect for holiday ambiance.

Santa Fe proves that I don’t need traditional Christmas scenery to have an unforgettable holiday trip. Instead of endless rows of colorful lights, the city combines its adobe architecture with farolitos, glowing lanterns and centuries-old Southwestern traditions.

The Canyon Road Farolito Walk is one of the experiences I’d especially want to see. Hundreds of farolitos illuminate the historic surroundings, creating a warm and atmospheric setting that feels very different from Christmas celebrations elsewhere in the country.

If I want snow, I can also head into the nearby mountains for winter activities. That combination of Southwestern culture, historic architecture and Christmas traditions makes Santa Fe one of the more unusual holiday destinations on this list.

Best for: Unique Christmas traditions, couples and a quieter holiday getaway

Don’t miss: Canyon Road Farolito Walk, Santa Fe Plaza and the historic downtown area

5. Orlando, Florida

Magical illuminated castle glowing vividly at night, perfect for tourism and architecture themes.

For me, Orlando would be the obvious choice if I wanted Christmas without having to rely on cold weather. The city’s theme parks go all-in on the holiday season, transforming familiar attractions into enormous Christmas celebrations.

At Walt Disney World Resort, I can see elaborately decorated parks, seasonal entertainment and Christmas-themed events. Universal Orlando Resort also gets into the spirit, with holiday decorations and special experiences throughout the resort.

The best part is that I can combine Christmas celebrations with theme park attractions, making Orlando particularly appealing for families who want an action-packed holiday vacation.

Best for: Families, theme parks and warm-weather Christmas trips

Don’t miss: Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort and the holiday events at the major theme parks

6. Aspen, Colorado

Two horses pull a sled in snowy Aspen with stunning mountain backdrop.

If my idea of Christmas involves snow-covered mountains, cozy lodges and skiing, I’d seriously consider Aspen. The Colorado mountain town combines a luxurious atmosphere with the kind of traditional winter scenery I associate with the holidays.

I can spend the day skiing or exploring the snowy surroundings, then head into town for Christmas lights, seasonal events and a warm meal. Aspen also has plenty of festive activities, from holiday markets and cookie decorating to seasonal entertainment.

For me, the biggest appeal is the combination of Christmas and a classic Rocky Mountain winter. I don’t have to choose between a holiday getaway and an outdoor adventure.

Best for: Snow, skiing, couples and luxury Christmas vacations

Don’t miss: Downtown Aspen, the Christmas lights, winter activities and the surrounding Rocky Mountains

7. Nashville, Tennessee

Captivating view of Nashville's skyline reflected on the river at sunset, showcasing urban architecture.

Nashville might be better known for country music, but the city knows how to celebrate Christmas too. During the holiday season, I can expect elaborate light displays, decorated venues, Christmas concerts and plenty of live entertainment.

What makes Nashville interesting is that the Christmas experience still feels connected to the city’s music culture. I can spend an evening listening to live music before heading out to see holiday lights or seasonal attractions.

It’s also a good option if I want a festive city trip without committing to a snowy destination. Recent rankings have placed Nashville among the strongest U.S. cities for Christmas decorations and holiday activity.

Best for: Live music, entertainment and festive nightlife

Don’t miss: Downtown Nashville, holiday light displays, seasonal concerts and local Christmas events

8. Savannah, Georgia

A beautifully decorated Christmas tree seen through a window in Savannah, Georgia.

Savannah is one of my favorite choices for a slower and more romantic Christmas getaway. Its historic streets, grand architecture and moss-covered squares already have plenty of character, and Christmas decorations add another layer of charm.

Rather than chasing huge attractions, I’d spend my time walking through the Historic District, looking at decorated buildings and stopping at cafés and restaurants along the way. The city’s mild winter weather is another advantage if I don’t want to deal with snow and freezing temperatures.

Savannah has also appeared among highly ranked U.S. Christmas destinations in recent travel research, making it a strong option for travelers looking for holiday charm in the South.

Best for: Couples, historic streets and a relaxed Christmas trip

Don’t miss: Historic District, River Street, City Market and the city’s decorated squares

9. Branson, Missouri

A red truck is parked in front of a brightly lit Christmas tree in a festive outdoor setting at dusk.

If I’m looking for a Christmas destination that puts holiday entertainment front and center, Branson is worth considering. The Missouri city is known for its theaters and family-friendly attractions, many of which introduce special Christmas shows and events during the holiday season.

The city also goes big on Christmas lights, decorations and seasonal entertainment. That makes it particularly appealing if I’m traveling with family and want plenty of organized activities rather than simply sightseeing.

Branson has also been recognized in recent rankings of U.S. Christmas destinations, including a 2025 analysis that placed it among notable cities for Christmas tours.

Best for: Families, Christmas shows and holiday entertainment

Don’t miss: Christmas shows, Silver Dollar City, holiday light displays and the Branson entertainment district

10. McAdenville, North Carolina

For a small-town Christmas experience, I’d put McAdenville on my list. The North Carolina community is famously known as Christmas Town U.S.A., and its holiday transformation is impressive considering the town has fewer than 1,000 residents.

During the Christmas season, homes and streets are covered with thousands of lights and decorations, creating the kind of old-fashioned holiday atmosphere that can be hard to find in larger cities.

I wouldn’t come here expecting skyscrapers, luxury shopping or huge attractions. I’d come specifically for the lights, the small-town atmosphere and the feeling of driving into a community that has made Christmas its biggest tradition.

Best for: Small-town Christmas charm, families and Christmas lights

Don’t miss: The Christmas lights, decorated homes, downtown McAdenville and the annual holiday celebrations

Which Christmas City Should You Visit?

If I wanted the classic Christmas experience, I’d choose New York City. For snow and storybook scenery, Leavenworth or Aspen would be at the top of my list. Chicago would be my choice for Christmas markets, while Orlando makes the most sense for a warm family vacation.

For something more unusual, I’d choose Santa Fe. And if I wanted a quieter getaway, Savannah would be hard to resist.

The best part is that there really isn’t one definition of a perfect Christmas trip in the USA. Whether I want snow-covered mountains, glowing city streets, European-style markets or warm Southern evenings, there’s a destination that can make the holiday season feel special.
